Please help my chosen charities
I am aiming to raise valuable funds for two important charities by completing my ride. Please help support them by following my link to the Virgin Fundraising page and donating any money that you can afford.
October 13, 2010.
For many, that date will be remembered as the day 33 miners in Chile were rescued after being trapped underground for 69 days.
For me, that date will always be remembered as the day that my father lost his battle with Prostate cancer. Having worked hard all his life, he had looked forward to retirement. Being able to go walking up mountains, taking photos of beautiful landscapes was to be the way that he would spend many enjoyable days. Yet, cruelly, he was never able to do that as he found out he had prostate cancer. For many people, prostate cancer is slow growing and does not severely affect them. For my father though, he had a fast growing form of cancer that spread and eventually led to him passing away.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer amongst men in the UK, approximately a quarter of men diagnosed with cancers are prostate related.
Over 10,700 men die of prostate cancer each year.
Risk of prostate cancer is low in men aged below 50, but this rises significantly amongst the over 50's.
40-50 - 0.2% men are diagnosed with prostate cancer
50-60 - 2.0%
60-70 - 6.3%
70-80 - 7.2%
